Abstract

ABSTRACT Today's world is becoming a global village as many international organizations like ECOWAS, AU, UNO, EU had been formed in search for Economic emancipation, unity and peace. Knowledge of a foreign language becomes crucial more than ever before since members of the international organization have divergent ideological and linguistic backgrounds. Knowledge of a foreign language has long been recognized as an essential ingredient of international trade. We need to understand and be understood by the other members of the world wide communities. For a systematic and thorough examination of the needs for foreign language education in Nigeria, the paper is divided into six parts: We have the introduction where what is meant by a foreign language is well explained. This is followed by the review of related literature. We have the subtitle: Factors That Guide The Choice Of A Foreign Language For Study. We examined the Socio-Political and Economic Benefits of learning French in Nigeria. Then we took a critical look at the Foreign Language Policy in Nigeria as it affects French. The paper concluded that Nigeria has a good language policy but the implementation as it affects French is a failure and we gave some recommendations
