Abstract
The level of maternal mortality in developing countries is worrisome thus different initiatives have been geared towards reducing it. This study examined the role cultural beliefs and practices play in women’s adoption of maternal health messages from radio. It was anchored on the Diffusion of Innovation Theory, which addresses the processes of idea, product, and practice or technology adoption among people of various cultures. The qualitative research design using Focus Group Discussion (FGD) and KAP (Knowledge, Attitude, and Practice) was adopted to gather data for this study. The population consisted of selected pregnant and post-partum women in Irolu, Ikenne Local Government Area with a sample size of 20 women within the reproductive age of 15 to 49. This study found that all the selected respondents listen to radio and find it to be a reliable source of maternal information because it is easy to understand the maternal health messages communicated in their native language. The study revealed that avoidance of certain foods, carrying oblation, taking concoctions, bathing baby with salt, are among the cultural practices believed by the women to aid safe child birth. The women claimed that they no longer observe these cultural practices because they have been informed through Dokita wa,a radio programme on maternal health of the dangers of these practices. This study concluded that maternal health messages on radio are informative and they help to improve the health of women during and after pregnancy.
