Abstract
An integrated geophysical investigation was carried out along segment of the Ondo-Ife highway located in the Basement Complex of Southwestern Nigeria with the view to delineating the geoelectric layers, subsurface structural features and bedrock topography as a means of establishing causal factors for the persistent highway instability observed in the study area. The Very Low Frequency Electromagnetic (VLF-EM) measurements were taken at intervals of 5 m along traverses established parallel to the road pavement. Schlumberger Vertical Electrical Sounding (VES) and 2D imaging using the dipole dipole con guration were adopted for the resistivity survey. The combined plots of raw real and ltered real VLF-EM data showed conductive zones at distances 25 - 75 m and 125 - 185 m, which could be suggestive of fault/fractured zones or conductive clay materials while the highly resistive materials were identified beneath the stable segment. The geoelectric sections identi ed 4-5 geologic layers comprising the topsoil, laterite, weathered layer, partly weathered/fractured basement and fresh bedrock. The subsoils on which the road pavement was founded at stable segments have high resistivity values (>200 m) while the subsoils on which the failed segments were founded are of relatively low resistivity values that are generally less than 200 m. Basement discontinuity and suspected geological features such as faults/fractured zone, joints and buried stream channels were identi ed from the 2D resistivity structure across the failed segments. The clayey sub-grade soil below the highway and the identi ed suspected geological features are the major geologic factors responsible for the highway instability.
